Luis Suarez gives verdict on EPL return with Liverpool transfer claim –

Luis Suarez confessed it would be “strange” to play for any Premier League team other than Liverpool as he talked up his strong bond with the Anfield faithful.

The Uruguayan striker also spoke of his regret at not winning the title during his three-and-a-half year stint on Merseyside, with the Reds falling just short in the 2013/14 season.

Suarez is considered one of the greatest Liverpool players of the Premier League era and registered an astonishing 129 goals or assists in 132 games for the club.

Now 34, he is showing no signs of letting up and scored 21 goals as Atletico Madrid won La Liga last season.

Suarez’s relationship with Liverpool means he has often been linked with a return in recent seasons, and he appeared to rule out signing for any other English club.

“Playing for any team other than Liverpool in England would be hard,” Suarez told  World Soccer Magazine .

“I had, and hope I still do have, such a good relationship with Liverpool fans that it would be strange for me to play for somebody else.”

Suarez also shared his happiness at Liverpool winning the Premier League in the 2019/20 season – something he was unable to do despite plundering 31 goals as the Reds finished second in the 2013/14 campaign.

He added: “It would have been special to win the league with Liverpool, but I am glad that their wait is now over.

“They look like a team that will compete for many seasons to come even if this one has not been the best for them. They are back where they belong.”

Meanwhile, Suarez has one year remaining on his contract with Atletico, although there is a clause in his deal which would allow him to leave this summer.

But the former Ajax forward insists he is content at the Wanda Metropolitano, saying: “At the moment I am enjoying my time here.

“I enjoy it here, we are settled in Spain – there is no need to think about me leaving.

“When I think how well I have settled in at Atletico and the faith the coach has shown in me, it was easily the right decision for me.”

Suarez – who is currently competing at the Copa America with Uruguay – also laughed off speculation he could link up with former Liverpool teammate and current Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, who led the Gers to the Scottish Premiership title last season.

He said: “I think Stevie is doing just fine without me! I am pleased but not at all surprised to see him win the league with Rangers.

“Winning is what he does and at some point in the future I am sure he will be at Liverpool again.”
