Manuel Neuer rainbow armband: UEFA halt Euro 2020 investigation – The Athletic

When has Neuer worn the armband?

Neuer has worn the armband for the games against France and Portugal.

He also wore it in a friendly game against Latvia.

What has been said?

The German FA released a statement late on Sunday: “UEFA has told the German FA they have stopped their review of the captain’s armband worn by Manuel Neuer.

“In the letter, the rainbow bandage is evaluated as a sign of support for diversity and thus for ‘good cause’.”

A UEFA spokesperson added: “UEFA looked into the armband worn by the player in question and, considering that it was promoting a good cause, i.e. diversity, the team will not face disciplinary proceedings.”

Is LGBTQ+ support an issue at Euro 2020?

Yes. This has become a huge topic of conversation around events in Hungary.

There have been two games in the nation, and the first, in particular, was marred by homophobia. A banner was spotted in the crowd with a message against the LGBTQ+ community.

Last week, the national parliament passed legislation by 157-1 that has been commonly interpreted as a law against what the government of right wing leader Victor Orban describes as “LGBT propaganda”. The law bans the promotion or portrayal of homosexuality or gender reassignment.
