PHS hosts summer basketball camps – Powell Tribune

After days in the gym with students, Powell High School and Northwest College basketball coaches shared a common sentiment: The future is bright.

PHS hosted its annual summer basketball camps in June, and both the boys’ and girls’ camps saw “great” turnouts. The boys’ camp, led by PHS coach Mike Heny and NWC head coach Jay Collins, was held June 21-24; the girls’ camp was held from June 28-30, with PHS coach Chelsea Buher, former NWC head coach Camden Levett and NWC athletic director Brian Erickson leading that one.

For the younger athletes, camp is a way to get them immersed in the sport, while the focus for older hoopsters is to hone their skills and find ways to improve.

“I love seeing them starting out not understanding something, then the lightbulb clicks on and they just get it,” Buher said. “It’s a great feeling.”

At the boys’ basketball camp, Collins cited the three-on-three games as a highlight of the week, where a few kids hit buzzer-beaters, plus “shot for shirt,” contests, where players were given shirts or hats if they made certain shots.

“It got really intense, and the kids really got after it,” Collins said.

For the girls’ camp, watching the girls compete against the NWC players and participate in skill drills were Buher’s top moments of the week, along with the talent show — a camp favorite.

And at both camps, it was an opportunity for the coaches to form bonds with the players of all ages.

“It’s a great time for the girls to build relationships and work with younger girls that they may play with at some point,” Buher said. “It’s not just a time for the girls to build relationships, but for us coaches too.”

All-in-all, the camps only sparked the coaches’ excitement for basketball in northwest Wyoming ahead of the 2021-22 season.

“Powell and Lovell have a lot of talented kids coming up,” Collins said. “It should be fun to watch.”

Added Buher, “I look forward to our future success for Panther Girls’ Basketball. It’s bright!”
