Women’s Basketball Ranks First in WBCA Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll – University of Maine Athletics

Orono, Maine — The University of Maine women’s basketball team ranked No. 1 in the 2020-21 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Academic Top 25 Team Honor Rolls, as announced by the WBCA on Tuesday, July 13. The Black Bears finished first among NCAA Division I members with a 3.900 cumulative team grade point average.

“There are no words to express how proud I am of our team,” says head coach Amy Vachon. “In our program, we compete in everything we do. To have the top GPA of all Division I teams in the country is incredible. Kudos to our players, our coaches, our professors, our academic support staff, and everyone else who supports our student-athletes. This recognition is just as important as any championship we could win. Simply amazing.”

The Top-25 ranking marks the fourth time in the past seven seasons in which the Black Bears have earned a spot on the WBCA Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll. Maine was last represented in the rankings when it checked in at No. 17 in 2020

The WBCA Academic Top 25 recognizes NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, and two-year college women’s basketball teams across the nation that carry the highest combined GPAs inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. The 2020-21 season is the 26th in which the WBCA has compiled the honor rolls.
