Bailey ready to shine in EPL | Sports – Jamaica Star Online

Having officially secured his move to the English Premier League (EPL) with Aston Villa, national winger Leon Bailey says that he is not intimidated by the physicality that the English top flight demands.

Bailey, 23, signed a reported five-year deal with Aston Villa yesterday surrounded by his father and agent Craig Butler at the Phoenix Academy headquarters in Kingston, finally getting his long-awaited move to England. Aston Villa reportedly paid his former German club Bayer Leverkusen PS30 million for his services after his best statistical season in Germany since joining the club in 2016.

Bailey had been tracked by several top Premier League clubs last summer. They include Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool but Aston Villa, who are on a big spending spree during the current window, got the nod from the player and his representatives. As he prepares for his debut EPL season, Bailey said that he is ready for the tough physical test which awaits him in the world’s most competitive league.

“I’ve always been a player who is very dominant regardless of my opponents. That’s how I was built. We have been playing with older people since we were young so, you know we grew up to be fearless,” Bailey said. “So I don’t have that (toughness of the EPL) on my mind. The only thing that is on my mind is that I’m going out there to destroy and continue to wave the flag high.”

What was important for him

Even with various clubs interested in his services in previous transfer windows, Bailey said what was important for him was the right fit.

“We’ve always said that we wanted to take it step by step and that is what we have always been doing. There are a lot of clubs that I could have gone to, but we decided that we didn’t want to rush anything. We wanted to take it step by step,” Bailey said. “And I think Aston Villa is a step in the right direction. It’s a top club. They have a big history. I think it’s the right choice and I am just looking forward to going out there and do my best.”

Bailey said that he has already had a discussion with his new manager, Dean Smith, and he is excited and looking forward to fitting into the team as quickly as possible.

Aston Villa will begin their season on August 14 away to newly promoted Watford, a club which has his national teammate Andre Gray in their squad.
