UEFA to make Champions League fans decision as Liverpool watch on – Liverpool Echo

UEFA will make a decision soon on whether away fans will be able to travel for Champions League group stage matches.

Speculation was sparked earlier this week when reports in France indicated visiting supporters may not be permitted at European competitions “until December 31” at the earliest.

It followed an apparent meeting between Lille fan groups and club officials, in which the news was reportedly passed on.

When the ECHO contacted UEFA for clarity, the governing body referred to the last official guidance on the situation.

Back in June, the UEFA Executive Committee took the decision that travelling fans would not be admitted during the entire qualifying phase and play-offs of UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League.

UEFA said this decision was taken “due to the very high number of matches, the fact that all qualification rounds and play-offs in the 2021/22 season are being played over two legs…and the ongoing and rapidly-changing travel restrictions”.

But UEFA said the situation will be reviewed ahead of the group stages of their club tournaments and all other UEFA competition matches.

And the next steps will take into account the general evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic across Europe.

While there is no specific date on when a call will be made, UEFA are expected to make an announcement before the Champions League group stage draw on Thursday, 26 August.

Liverpool qualified for this season’s competition after a remarkable run of form at the end of last term.

Jurgen Klopp’s men won eight of their final 10 matches to eventually secure a third-placed finish.
