Duke basketball commit sizzles in front of NBA star – Ball Durham

Duke basketball should be drooling over Dariq Whitehead’s high school show.

During a recent trip to Florida, two-time Utah Jazz All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell checked out the state’s prep hoops scene, including future Duke basketball small forward Dariq Whitehead.

It looks as if Whitehead alone gave Mitchell his money’s worth by splashing five 3-pointers in helping Montverde Academy to a decisive 84-26 season-opening victory over Life Christian Academy.

High school box scores are all but nonexistent. But the highlights below show Whitehead (wearing No. 4 in white) delivering several driving scores and dazzling dimes as well while refusing to play at any tempo other than his own. The confidence level is well beyond his years:

Now, here is a zoomed-in look at another recent performance from the 6-foot-8, 205-pound New Jersey native. It comes courtesy of Ballislife, which tagged the probable one-and-done Blue Devil as a “future NBA star” himself:

A highly ranked Duke basketball class already

Dariq Whitehead, a five-star who announced his college destination in early August and recently rose one spot to No. 5 on the 247Sports 2022 Composite, is not the only early prize for the Duke Blue Devils along the 2022 recruiting trail.

No, the program has filled a couple of more potential needs via two more commitments within the past two months. Five-star power forward Kyle Filipowski, who now ranks No. 14, and four-star shooting guard Jaden Schutt, who jumped from No. 107 to No. 73, plan to join Whitehead at Duke for the 2022-23 campaign.

With all the ranking bumps to future Blue Devils, the three-deep Duke recruiting haul leapfrogged Kansas to No. 2 on the 247Sports 2022 Team Rankings.

Plus, head coach-in-waiting Jon Scheyer and his cohorts appear to remain in contention for at least four other high school seniors: five-star big man Dereck Lively, five-star small forward Mark Mitchell, five-star shooting guard JJ Starling, and five-star combo guard Anthony Black.
