Duke basketball: Jon Scheyer picks up another major commitment – Ball Durham

Duke basketball recruiting successes sure are piling up quickly these days.

Oak Hill Academy (Va.) point guard Caleb Foster, who currently sits at No. 12 overall on the 247Sports 2023 Composite, announced this week that he is now a future Duke basketball player. Although the decision came without prior warning and without the 6-foot-5, 190-pound true floor general ever naming finalists, it wasn’t much of a surprise.

After all, here’s what Foster said to ESPN.com about the simple choice in his mind:

“I always wanted to go to Duke. I don’t want to waste any more time or the time of others.”

Simple enough.

Foster, the first 2023 prize for the Blue Devils, is now the only high school junior ranking higher than No. 20 in the country who has revealed a landing spot.

There is no doubt that Foster’s addition to “The Brotherhood” keeps the recruiting momentum alive and well in Durham.

Jon Scheyer has reeled in commitments from four recruits since learning of his new title in early June as Duke head coach-in-waiting. Three are of the five-star variety: Foster plus 2022 small forward Dariq Whitehead and 2022 power forward Kyle Filipowski. The other is four-star 2022 shooting guard Jaden Schutt.

A good omen for Duke basketball’s future?

The past two Duke squads that cut down April nets featured a starting guard who played his high school ball at Oak Hill Academy. Those two Blue Devil gems are Nolan Smith and Quinn Cook.

Also, it’s worth mentioning that the starting point guard for the 1998-99 Duke team, William Avery, was an Oak Hill alum as well. That team finished with a 37-2 record and only a few points short of a national title.

Yes, the signs appear to say the Blue Devils snagged a potential program treasure in Caleb Foster.
