Illinois Basketball: 2023 in-state forward gets another visit from the Illini – Writing Illini

Ty Pence’s recruitment is growing by the day, as many teams are joining the Illinois basketball program in offering the in-state talent.

Illinois’ involvement in the Pence recruitment started back in June. The Illini offered the relatively unknown forward a scholarship, and his notoriety started to pick up a little bit.

Since that offer, Pence has started to pull in more and more offers by big-time programs. Some of the most recent offers include Butler and Iowa State, two teams in the top 25 regularly the past decade.

Pence’s recruitment will continue to grow over the next year or so and for good reason. He has a good build at 6-foot-6, 180-pounds, and he is starting to register in the recruiting rankings. 247Sports has him as a three-star recruit and ranked as the No. 204 player in the class of 2023. With big offers continuing to roll in, look for his stock to rise even more in the coming months.

Illinois basketball wants to keep Pence home.

Ever since the Illini offered Pence a scholarship back in June, they have been recruiting the kid. Just about a month ago, Pence visited Champaign on an unofficial visit.

It now looks like Illinois traveled up to see Pence just days ago, according to Midwest Prospect Academy. The Illini were joined by Iowa State that day. It looks like Michigan State and DePaul are also interested in the in-state rising star.

Illinois would be a perfect landing spot for Pence. He could play the No. 3 or No. 4 spot with his size. This would be optimal for the program considering there will be so much turnover after the next couple of seasons. I love Pence’s game too.

Pence can run the court well. He is smart in transition. I also love his shot. I think he could form into a great player under Brad Underwood.

Illinois is clearly wanting a player like Pence on the roster. It looks like Chester Frazier is his main recruiter. So far, Frazier has been able to land some solid talent. Hopefully, we can add Pence to that list.
